The Digital Aphorisms of Rip Kungler

Visual generalities about life and language

The Rip Kungler School of Digital Aphorisms facilitated by PIMPAMPUM, Phrasr and Flickr

The Creative Protocols for Digital Aphorisms

Digital Aphorisms are designed using Phrasr that sucks in tagged images, publicly available from the Flickr database. Each Flickr image used in the digital aphorism acknowledges the original photographer and was originally tagged by the photographer with the word it visualises. The selection of images creating the aphorism is limited to those available with the specific tag publicly in the Flickr database

Digital aphorisms operate on speed - do not spend too much time on the images.

Whatever is sitting at the forefront of your mind, grab it and condense it quickly into a textual metaphor or phrase.

Words first and then go for the images as they erupt.

Build the theme for the aphorism on the first image you select.

Let the images dragged from Flickr speak to you as you construct the aphorism.

A good aphorism contains only ambiguity, tension and paradox - meaning is secondary and comes NOT from the aphorism but the digital audience.

Notes on My Poetic Inspiration

The digital poems I have created from April 13 until May 22 where all inspired by the wonderful book "Proust was A Neuroscientist" by Jonah Leher. The discoveries I made about the thinking behind the processes of great masters such as Cezanne, Stein, Stravinsky and Woolf and how they informed our understandings of the way our brain works will remain with me forever. I advised Lehrer by email of his inspiration and received this response

"Thank you! I'm deeply honored... best wishes,
jonah"
I am the one who is honoured, Jonah.

Creating Digital Aphorisms Live at Ignite Sydney 8

Worked live at Ignite Sydney 8 creating digital aphorisms based on the speakers presentations. During their presentation, I wrote an aphorism, selected images from PIMPAMPUM and published the result. I had to change very few images so the random sampling is good and efficient. The PIMPAMPUM software platform is quite cumbersome and slow, often jamming or selecting wrong images. The replay function is slow and jams also quite often. This precluded us from playing the aphorism to the audience at…See More
